The official size of a horseshoe pit is 36 inches by 72 inches. It can be reduced to as little as 31 inches by 43 inches.
Each pitcher's box must be 72 inches by 72 inches. The pitcher's box consists of two pitching platforms and the pit in between them.
The platforms are traditionally made of wooden planks. When the pit is smaller than 36 inches by 72 inches, the open area should be covered with wood. The pitchers' boxes should be 40 feet apart.
In the United States, the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association regulates and manages the official rules for playing horseshoes.
