What Are Miniature Donkeys?

Miniature donkeys are a small breed of donkey that are originally from the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Sicily. Although both types of donkey are very much the same, they are referred to as Sardinian or Sicilian according to their ancestry.

While these miniature donkeys are mostly nonexistent in their land of origin, they have been bred by breeders in the United States for many years. According to the Danby Farm registry, which was established in 1958, there are at least 15,000 of these donkeys, with many more that have not been registered. The average height for a miniature donkey is 33 to 34 inches, with some fully grown adults being as short as 26 inches tall.
