Several organizations have military dogs available for adoptions. These organizations include Pets for Patriots, Vets Adopt Pets and Warrior Dog Foundation.
Pets For Patriots often lists military dogs needing homes on its website. The organization strives to adopt out these dogs rather than seeing them put down or abandoned. The organization works closely with other organizations that have pets for adoption and helps pair people with dogs.
Vets Adopt Pets adopts dogs who have returned home from war and are incapable of working, Many of these dogs have medical problems resulting in high vet bills. Potential adopters must complete an application and there is usually a waiting list for between 1 year and 18 months.
The Warrior Dog Foundation evaluates each retired military dog and determines its temperament. Each dog is adopted out on a case by case basis, but handlers get first pick of the available dogs. This organization processes around 25 dogs each year. Potential adopters must own their home, have adequate finances to be able to support the medical needs of the dog and live in an area where the dog is not restricted. The Warrior Dog Foundation also houses and cares for several military dogs whose injuries are so severe, they cannot be adopted out to civilian families.
