How Many Pit Bull Attacks Occur Per Year?

According to the website DogsBite, there were 23 fatal dog attacks in 2012 involving pit bulls. This number represents 61 percent of all fatal dog attacks for that year.

No one knows how many non-fatal dog attacks occur. The American Humane Association estimates that 4.7 million dog bites occur each year in the U.S. Many are never reported. The pit bull is a favorite among owners who train and breed dogs for fighting and as guard dogs, but without such training, the pit bull is not inherently aggressive. When kept by a responsible and loving owner, the breed makes an excellent family dog.
