As of 2014, roughly 3,000 mandrills live in the wild, according to Earth Touch News Network. The primates are restricted to the rain forests of equatorial Africa, where they have declined by about 30 percent over the last three decades.

The world's largest monkeys, the species is recognized by the IUCN as the primate with the highest priority for conservation. The monkeys are overhunted because their meat is considered a delicacy. Other main threats include the spread of agriculture and increased land development. Recent studies have also pointed to the effects of global climate change, as it is believed that rising temperatures are slowly drying out their habitat.
