Mange is a skin condition caused by certain species of mites. Although fairly common in dogs, it is rarer in cats. Mange is sometimes also known as scabies.
Mange presents with patchy fur and a moth-eaten appearance to the skin. The infection causes intense itching, scratching and restlessness. A veterinarian will take skin scrapings and examine them under a microscope for the presence of mites. A cat who has mange, should be isolated to prevent transmission to other pets and humans. The vet will prescribe medication to kill the mites, either topically, by injection or in a shampoo, depending on the cat and the type of mange.
