Kennel cough disappears within 3 to 6 weeks, depending upon the age and health condition of the dog. Healthy dogs can fight off the infection within 3 weeks, while puppies and older dogs may take a month or longer to fully recover.
Dogs that begin prescribed veterinary treatment should experience relief and improvement in as little as a week. A dog that receives treatment but appears to worsen or doesn't experience any relief from the cough within a week after treatment should visit the veterinarian again to ensure there isn't something more serious happening within the lungs.
Kennel cough is contagious, and dogs affected with this infection should be quarantined from other dogs. There are vaccinations available to help prevent the transmission of kennel cough, and dog owners who board their pets regularly should ensure their dog is up to date with vaccines.
