Wild lions are mostly found in sub-Saharan Africa. There is a very small Asian lion population that lives in the Gir Forest of India.
At one time lions lived throughout most of Africa as well as parts of Europe and Asia. Hunting and reduced territory have now made African lions a vulnerable species, and Asian lions are endangered.
Male lions defend the pride's territory. They mark their turf with urine, roar at intruders to warn them away and chase off any animals that get too close to their area.
Female lions are the pride's hunters. They work together to chase and kill large animals such as zebras and wildebeests.
