According to Lion Alert, lions have a well-developed sense of smell. All cat species are born with an olfactory organ on the roof of their mouths, referred to as a Jacobson's organ, that allows for accurate detection of prey, as well as potential mates.

Lions possess an ability to sniff out nearby prey and estimate the length of time the prey has been in the area. Lions also have an acute sense of hearing that allows them to hear prey up to a mile away and excellent vision that is five times greater than human eyesight. The average lifespan of a wild lion is 25 years.
