The average spider can live anywhere from 1 to 3 years depending on its habitat and protection from predators. The garden spider, also known as an orb spider, lives about a year unless it finds a sheltered area away from extreme temperature changes, in which case it can live a few years.
Male spiders succumb to death much quicker than female spiders, usually dying after mating. The female black widow, which lives from 1 to 3 years, often kills the male black widow after mating. Male orb spiders also often die after mating. Tarantulas can live upwards of 20 years, making this type of spider the longest living.
