A large ant farm, also called a vivarium, is an ant habitat that makes it easier to study ant colonies and how ants behave. Some ant farms are designed by enthusiasts who want to observe ants with minimal effort, while others are suited for advanced researchers.
Ant farms come in many different shapes, sizes and materials. Traditional ant colonies use dirt or sand from the exact area where the ants were retrieved. Using light-colored material for dark ants or dark-colored material for light ants is ideal as this allows for easier observation of the colony. There is also a nutrient-rich gel developed by scientists at NASA that acts as both a food and home for the ants and helps make them even easier to observe.
