Because Komodo dragons are at the top of the food chain, they eat almost anything they can find, including carrion, deer, pigs and smaller Komodo dragons. They have even been known to kill and eat humans.
Komodo dragons are ambush predators, using camouflage to hide and wait for unsuspecting prey to wander by. When a prey animal arrives, Komodo dragons attack using their powerful legs to leap out and ambush the animal, grasping it with its sharp claws and serrated teeth. If the animal manages to escape, it doesn't usually survive long, however. A Komodo dragon's saliva teems with over 50 strains of deadly bacteria. They have been known to follow prey for miles before it eventually dies from blood poisoning, usually within 24 hours.
