Dogs belong to the kingdom known as "Animalia," which includes many other animals such as cats, deer, squirrels and bears. The dog's full scientific classification is "canis lupus familiaris," according to the United State government's Integrated Taxonomic Information System.
The domestic dog evolved from the wolf over thousands of years. In fact, if a dog and a wolf mated together, they would be able to reproduce. However, domestic dogs are not equipped to survive in the wild on their own because the wolf survival instincts that they once possessed were discarded somewhere along the evolutionary line. It has been over 12,000 years since humans decided to take domesticated dogs into their homes as pets.
