Little blue penguins are just 12 inches tall and weigh roughly 2 to 3 pounds, making them the smallest penguin species in the world. Some scientists believe that little blue penguins are among the first penguin species that evolved from flying birds.
Little blue penguins tend to live an average of 6.5 years, although some have been known to live for up to 20 years. They are found only along coastlines and inland shores in Australia and New Zealand. Little blue penguins may be preyed upon by seagulls, fur seals and sharks. However, dogs, cats and foxes introduced to their habitat also pose a threat to the tiny penguin species.
