In August 2013, Iams recalled many of its dry dog food formulas, including Healthy Naturals Chicken, Healthy Naturals Weight Control and Proactive Health. Suspected potential for salmonella contamination instigated the recall.
The Proctor & Gamble company of Cincinnati voluntarily recalled specifics lots of dry food due to fear of salmonella contamination. The products thought to be affected were produced at the same manufacturing site during a 10-day window. The company claimed that no salmonella related illnesses were reported with the reclaimed product lots.
Salmonella can cause severe sickness and can be fatal to animals as well as humans. Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are the most susceptible.
