This ingredient repels dogs because the capsaicin in the pepper irritates the dog's nose, eyes and throat. However, spices easily get washed away by rain, so this remedy will have to be reapplied regularly.

Citrus juices or peels from fruits, such as lemons, limes, tangerines and grapefruits, are also effective. Gardeners suggest mixing citrus juice or peels with coffee grounds and applying it to your lawn to both repel dogs and fertilize your lawn.

Spraying white vinegar around the perimeter of the lawn also repels dogs by creating a type of chemical fence. However, vinegar has a pungent smell to both dogs and humans and will kill plants if applied directly to your lawn.

Mothballs are also a repellent, but unlike the previous three, they are toxic to both dogs and humans. The scent will deter dogs, but mothballs are poisonous if ingested.
