The American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium-sized dog weighing 22 to 78 pounds and standing 14 to 24 inches tall. A closely related breed, the American Bully, weighs 70 to 120 pounds and stands 13 to 21 inches tall.
American Pit Bull Terriers are powerfully built dogs that combine strength, agility and a strong desire to please. The breed was developed as a farm dog suitable for working cattle and hogs and also is suitable as a guard dog. American Pit Bull Terriers need early training, proper socialization and consistent discipline and can be excellent family dogs if these conditions are met. American Bullies were developed by crossing American Pit Bull Terriers with American Staffordshire Terriers and other related types in the mid-1990s with the goal of creating an all-around family dog.
