Heat lamps are special lamps that provide extra heat to outdoor or kenneled dogs. They are most commonly used with newborn puppies that are kept in outdoor kennel facilities. Some heat lamps emit light as well as heat. Special heating lamps that emit only infrared energy are also available.
Dogs that are kept outdoors with access to a dog house may require extra heat during the winter months. A heat lamp is a common method of heating a dog house. A metal box surrounding a heat lamp, called a heater box, is fixed inside the dog house. A regular light bulb can be used to generate heat in a heater box, but special infrared bulbs or ceramic emitters are also available.
