The Yorkshire Terrier, commonly referred to as the Yorkie, is a breed of dog that looks attractive in a number of different grooming styles. Common styles include the Flared Cut, Westie Cut, Squared Cut, and 3-Layer Cut.
The choice of grooming style is a very individual choice. Factors such as the owner's personal preference, amount of available time for grooming, the environment in which the dog lives, the regular activities of the dog, and any health or skin conditions the dog may have all affect the ideal style for a specific dog.
Shorter styles require more frequent trimming but not as much daily care as longer styles. Shorter styles may be a good choice for active dogs that spend a good deal of time playing outdoors or swimming or dogs that live in hot and humid climates. Short clips tend to stay cleaner, dry more quickly, are less likely to tangle, and generally keep the dog cooler than longer clips do. Dogs with short clips also tend to track less dirt, dust, and debris into the home.
Some owners enjoy the look of a longer coat. For dogs that don't play outside a lot or who do not swim, a longer clip may be suitable. Longer coats require increased daily care to keep the coat clean and tangle-free. In colder, harsher climates, a longer coat can provide added warmth for the dog.
