As of 2014, popular names for a male cat include Toby, Garfield, Simba and Tigger. Many people name their cat after a character in their favorite movie, such as Oliver from Disney's "Oliver and Company" or Milo, the lead character in "Milo and Otis."

Other names include Finn, Sheldon, Jax and Dexter. Some names reflect physical attributes such as the cat's color pattern. Such names include Mittens, Tux and Socks. The popularity of pet names rises and declines with pop culture. Names such as Snowball, Baby, Cosmo and Nemo lost ground with many pet owners as the exclusivity of the names declined.
