According to PetGuide.com, a Golden Retriever makes a perfect family pet or companion. Golden Retrievers are intelligent, eager to please and usually patient and gentle with children. Because of their intelligence, they can be trained to fulfill many roles.
Golden Retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs with the role of retrieving shot game. The breed is still used for hunting, but Golden Retrievers also serve as guide dogs, mobility assistance dogs and detection dogs. They are well suited to obedience and agility competitions and can be trained for search and rescue work. They make poor guard dogs due to their friendly, trusting dispositions but may be adequate watch dogs as they bark at a stranger's approach.
