Gary Fisher is considered one of the founding fathers of mountain bikes. In 1976, after improving on his 1930 Schwinn Excelsior X, he participated in the Repack downhill race, in which he set the record at 4 minutes and 22 seconds. In 1979, his roommate, Charlie Kelly, coined the term "mountain bike" and the two soon started the company MountainBikes. However, in 1983 the company had to be dissolved. That same year, Fisher started Gary Fisher Mountain Bikes. The company is now owned by Trek Bicycle Corporation.
