The emperor penguin is near the top of the food chain, feeding on fish, krill and squid. Only large marine mammals feed on the emperor penguin, including sharks.
The emperor penguin is agile and strong in the water, both qualities that make it a good predator. It is a great diver that can dive deeper than other birds; records for emperor penguin dives reach up to 1,750 feet. The emperor penguin normally spends around five minutes or less at a time under the water and only dives several hundred feet below the surface. This penguin can swim fast when diving for its prey.
