Fish live in almost every available body of water, including rivers, lakes, oceans and streams. The species of fish determines whether it lives in saltwater or freshwater. Fish also live at various water depths with some fish preferring deep water and others staying close to the surface.
Small fish often live near the surface of the water looking for food and attempting to escape the jaws of larger fish. Bass and trout may feed near the surface of the water, but are often found a few feet below the surface in lakes and rivers. Saltwater fish include sailfish, flounder and tuna, which live in the depths of the ocean.
