Fireflies thrive in numerous habitats across the globe, particularly in forests and fields. There are around 2,000 species of fireflies, most of which are winged. Tropical Asian, Central American and South American regions have the most diversity. Some fireflies also live in arid locations, but most prefer wetter environments. Wherever fireflies go, the thing they look for is standing water. They prefer to live close to rivers, lakes, ponds and streams, although they don’t require lots of water to survive. Any location that holds water is an ideal habitat for fireflies.

Fireflies are nocturnal creatures that are typically seen on summer nights. They have light organs below their abdomens that allow them to produce a luminescent glow. The insects mix oxygen with the luciferin inside their cells to create light with nearly no heat. During daytime, they mostly spend their time on long grass on the ground. Long grass hides fireflies well and gives them a better position to signal at night. When night comes, fireflies climb to the peak of the blades of grass and fly to tree branches to call for mates.
