A fight between hyenas and lions is purely about competition for food and territory. Both predators share the same areas of Africa and hunt for the same food. It is common for disputes to occur between them, often turning fatal.
Attacks between these two groups of animals also often occur with no apparent cause. One major conflict that occurred in Ethiopia in 1999 was a "turf" war between lions and hyenas that lasted two weeks. The relationship between lions and hyenas has been combative and ongoing for over 12,000 years. While hyenas are often portrayed negatively as scavengers, in part due to Disney's "The Lion King," sometimes it is the lions who steal food away from the hyenas. Some male lions even harass and maul groups of hyenas for fun.
