The Greyhound is the fastest breed of dog in the world. The Greyhound has been known to reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Other dogs that rank about as fast as a Greyhound include Whippets, Vizlas, Weimaraners, Salukis, Scottish Deerhounds, Afghan Hounds, Ibizan Hounds and German short haired pointers.
The Greyhound is part of the American Kennel Club's Hound Group and was originally recognized by the organization as an official breed in 1885. Greyhounds are generally non-temperamental, gentle and independent house pets that need room to run. They have a narrow head, with a sleek body and long legs. Greyhounds are often used as runners at pari-mutuel dog tracks.
