The fastest land animal is the cheetah. The cheetah is considered a sprinter and is capable of reaching speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. Cheetahs can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds, which is slightly faster than most automobiles.
The cheetah increases its speed up to four times faster than humans, but it only runs at top speed for seconds at a time. While running, cheetahs use their tails to turn left and right. These are the only large cats capable of turning in mid-air when sprinting. The cheetah spends more time in the air than on the ground while sprinting.
