According to the Mountain Lion Foundation, mountain lions, also known as cougars and panthers, can sprint at speeds up to 50 mph. Over longer distances, they are able to maintain a pace of 10 mph.
Mountain lions are solitary hunters that seek food at night. When they find prey, the big cats attack from behind. A mountain lion's diet typically consists of deer, coyotes, raccoons, rodents, elk, feral hogs and porcupines. Once an animal is killed, the mountain lion covers it with leaves or grasses. This hides the body from other carnivores and keeps the meat fresher. The mountain lion returns to this spot for several days to feed on the carcass.
