An English lab puppy is a young domesticated dog of the Labrador retriever breed, possessing a stocky build and heavy fur coat. Although Labrador retrievers are commonly divided into two groups, American and English, the two are not recognized as separate breeds.
Labrador retrievers come in two different styles or conformations. American or field-style dogs are lankier and have a narrower head and longer muzzle, while English or show conformation dogs are stockier, with blocky heads and denser coats.
The breed standard for all dogs of the breed is the same in both countries (except in regards to height), but Labrador retrievers in the United States were bred more as working dogs than their English counterpoints. This resulted in the two styles developing within the breed.
