Basic dog training methods include aversive and reward-based training. In aversive training, owners punish the dog for incorrect behavior and reward the dog by removing something unpleasant from its environment. In reward-based training, owners reward the dog for correct behavior and punish the dog by taking away what it wants.
For example, an owner can train her dog in the aversive method by putting pressure on the dog's collar in an uncomfortable manner. When the dog responds correctly to the trainer, she removes the pressure. An example of reward-based training is giving the dog a toy or treat when it behaves or responds properly.
