Some critics have claimed that the dog food Beneful is toxic for dogs, reports CBS News and NBC News. A class-action lawsuit was filed in February 2015 against Nestle Purina Petcare, the maker of Beneful. Purina denies that the foods are harmful.
The lawsuit against Purina claims that Beneful dry foods contain the toxic ingredients propylene glycol and mycotoxins. Propylene glycol also is used for vehicle antifreeze, while mycotoxins are made by a fungus in grains. These ingredients are alleged to have caused thousands of dog deaths through kidney and liver failure and injured many other dogs, with symptoms including bleeding, vomiting, weight loss and seizures, CBS and NBC report.
The lawsuit names eight Beneful varieties, including Purina Beneful Healthy Weight, Original, Incredibites and Healthy Growth For Puppies. Two previous lawsuits against Beneful were dismissed, CBS reports.
