Some different types of rodents are rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters and guinea pigs. Mice and rats are in the same rodent group as voles and lemmings. Another group includes squirrels, woodchucks, marmots, chipmunks and gophers.
Rodents are often identified based on their groups. Each group includes rodents that have similar characteristics, diets and homes.
Capybaras, porcupines, chinchillas, guinea pigs and agouti are all in the same rodent group. There are also desert rodents, such as hopping mice, jerboas and kangaroo rats. These are all found in hot, dry and arid climates. Mole rodents, such as mole rats and naked moles, are known for their ability to burrow underground.
