As of March 2015, Nutro has been part of two major recalls for dog food. In 2009, Nutro recalled dog food for potential contamination by non-edible plastic. In 2007, Nutro was involved in the Menu Foods recall for contaminated wheat gluten that caused renal failure in hundreds of pets.
The 2007 recall affected hundreds of products and dozens of brands, including dog foods from Nutro's Basic, Natural Choice, Max and Ultra lines. The affected foods included Chinese-sourced wheat gluten, which was contaminated with melamine and cyanuric acid. The 2009 recall occurred when a worker's hard hat made its way into the manufacturing line, causing melted plastic to contaminate specific batches of Ultra and Natural Choice dog food.
