When Is Deer-Hunting Season in Virginia?

In general, archery season runs from Oct. 3 to Nov. 13 and Nov. 9 to Jan. 2, muzzleloader season runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 13 and Dec. 12 to Jan. 2, and firearms season runs from Nov. 14 to Jan. 2. Dates vary by county and type of deer.

The precise dates on which hunting is permitted in Virginia with a given type of weapon vary by county and by whether the deer is antlered or antlerless. Specific information can be found on the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website.

In addition to the regular seasons, Virginia has a Youth and Apprentice Hunting Day on Sept. 26 to 27. Hunters under the age of 16 and apprentice hunters who hold valid licenses may hunt on these dates when accompanied by a hunter possessing a regular Virginia hunting license or who is exempt from needing a license.
