The puppy cut is appropriate for adult Maltese dogs as well as puppies. Puppy-cut hair is the same length over the body, face, ears and tail. Lengths between 1/4 inch and 1 inch are typical in the puppy cut. Cutting hair shorter than 1/4 inch may make the dog vulnerable to sunburn and bug bites. Hair also may not grow back properly if it is clipped too short.
In the teddy bear cut, the hair is about 1/4 inch long on the sides and back and longer elsewhere. The groomer achieves a teddy-bear look by leaving the facial hair round and full. Hair on top of the head remains long enough to be pulled into a topknot.
The Maltese short cut is the most complex cut. Back and sides are 1/4 inch in length from the bottom of the skull to the base of the tail. The stomach, chest, bottom and front of the neck are cut very close. Leg hair is 1 1/2 inches long. The muzzle is 3/4 inch long, and hair on top of the head is rounded. Ears are even with the bottom of the head, and the tail sports a 2-inch fringe.Learn more about Dogs
