Carefully shop for and purchase an appropriate dog crate. There are several types of crates available. Wire crates are the most commonly purchased and used because they allow a dog to see what is going on around him. The crate should be big enough for your dog to lie down and turn around comfortably.
Set the crate up per manufacturer instructions. Place something soft in the bottom of the crate, as well as the dog's favorite toys.
Put some treats in the crate, and encourage the dog to go in on his own. Leave the crate door open, and reward the dog every time he goes in there on his own. Continue to do so until the dog is familiar and comfortable with the crate.
Confine the dog to the crate for short periods of time while remaining in his presence. When the dog is comfortable with this, confine him to the crate for longer periods of time until he is completely crate trained.
