The southern black racer, the red rat, the southern ring neck, the eastern garter and the rough green snake are some of the most common snakes found in Florida backyards. The Brahminy blind snake and the southern banded water snake are common to urban areas as well.
All of these snake species are non-venomous and pose no threat to humans. The black racers are very common and often misidentified with the poisonous cottonmouth water snake. People generally find these snakes sunning themselves on walkways, lawns, shrubbery and fences. After a rain, it is not uncommon to find them inside homes.
