Common pig feed ingredients include ground corn, soybean meal, fish meal and an assorted number of added vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Some feeds have extra animal protein, oats and wheat.
The amount of food a pig requires depends on its purpose. Most pigs do well with between 4 and 6 pounds of food per day divided into two or three meals. Pregnant and nursing pigs may need twice as much food. Pigs need a varied diet, and it is permissible to supplement with fresh fruits, vegetables and kitchen scraps. Overfeeding a pig leads to too much body fat and poor health. Water is always a necessity.
