The bearded dragon is native to Australia, although it is a popular exotic pet throughout the United States. Part of its appeal is the ruff of skin around its throat that it flares out and the spines along its body, throat and head. It has a long tail.

Owning a bearded dragon can be tricky because of all the specialized equipment needed. A dragon needs at least a 40-gallon tank with a screen top cover. When furnishing the tank, an owner needs to avoid using sand because a young lizard might swallow it; an adult bearded dragon can handle sand. Because dragons like to sit up off the ground, a rock, log or branch is a good piece of furniture to use. Special fluorescent bulbs need to be placed above the screen at the top of tank and be within 8 inches of the bearded dragon, so it can bask in the warmth. The temperature during basking needs to be 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit with the night temperature between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
