Why Do Chihuahuas Burrow?
Last Updated Mar 24, 2020 6:32:33 PM ET
Chihuahuas love to burrow and will burrow under everything from blankets to dirt, which many scientists believe is an instinct that comes from their ancestors who lived in the desert and needed to burrow under the sand to survive. Chihuahuas are very small dogs, weighing approximately 6 pounds, so burrowing is easier for them than for larger dogs.
There are other dog breeds that enjoy burrowing under pillows for warmth or safety, but the Chihuahua is one of the only breeds that seems to have a strong instinct for burrowing. The Chihuahua is a member of the toy group within the AKC and is considered a companion dog with high-strung yet lovable terrier qualities.
