Shelter capacity varies dependant on volunteer time and donations, but according to the 2014 financial reports of the Sacramento SPCA, 6,925 animals were received during that year. This gives a capacity of roughly 577 animals per month or 132 per week.
However, only 526 animals were placed in new permanent homes in 2014, a rate of only 8 percent. Around 5 percent of the animals admitted were returned to owners who had lost them. This leaves 87 percent of animals in long term shelter or foster care or having to be put to sleep because of otherwise potentially treatable conditions that the shelter does not have the resources to support.
