As of 2013, the American Kennel Club announced that English bulldogs are the fifth most popular breed. They're easily recognized by their stout, muscular bodies, short noses, wide heads, hanging skin under the neck, drooping lips, facial folds and occasional protruding underbites. Their coat is short, flat and sleek. Their coats can be red, fawn, white, brindle or piebald, which is a mixture of large white areas of fur contrasted against occasional patches of color. Bulldogs' tails are naturally short and sometimes screwed, unlike other breeds whose tails are docked for aesthetic purposes.
Bulldogs were originally very aggressive by nature, but have since been bred so as to temper their dispositions. They're considered excellent family companions due to their ability to bond strongly with children and other pets in the household. Bulldogs generally have a short life expectancy of just 6.5 years. Their compacted snouts create difficulties with breathing, making English bulldogs especially susceptible to heat stroke. They must be kept in well-shaded ventilated areas, preferably with air conditioning and easy access to water.
