The cross between a Maltese and a West Highland White Terrier (Westie) is sometimes called a Highland Maltie. Greenfield Puppies and Kathy's Little Pups both sell Highland Malties.
Kathy's Little Pups says that Westies shed and are not hypoallergenic but that the Maltese is hypoallergenic. The purpose of mixing the Maltese with the Westie is to try to create a nonshedding hypoallergenic Westie-type dog. Mixing the Westie with a nonterrier breed such as the Maltese can also eliminate or reduce the Westie's terrier traits of digging and catching rodents. However, Kathy's Little Pups warns that since the Highland Maltie is a mixed breed the traits of the adult dog cannot be determined by looking at the puppies.
The Highland Maltie is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club.
