Full Answer

Black bears are the most common bears in North America. They are solitary and have large home ranges. They hibernate through winter, relying on excess fat accumulated over summer and fall.

Females give birth during hibernation and nurse the cubs until spring. Each mother typically has two or three cubs at a time. They remain with her an average of two years, during which time she acts extremely protective of them.
