Grasshoppers have very strong wings that provide them with the ability to fly a great distance in search of food or for a mate. Grasshoppers can also fly pretty high considering their large size.
Grasshoppers also have very powerful legs, which provides them with the added boost they need to take off from the ground. Along with the ability to fly and jump, grasshoppers can make music by rubbing their hind legs against their forewings. The band-winged grasshoppers also crepitate, or make noises, when they fly by snapping their wings. The noise is not very melodic, but other grasshoppers don't mind. While a grasshopper can detect intensity and rhythm, they cannot detect pitch.
