Some common places to purchase a domesticated ferret include reputable pet stores and breeders. Ferrets are often available for adoption from animal shelters and rescue groups as well. Helpful websites such as Ferret.org offer lists of breeders and rescues.
As of 2015, there are still some places that restrict keeping ferrets as pets. Only two states – California and Hawaii – restrict ferret ownership statewide. Within other states where ferrets are considered legal pets, there are smaller locales that have restrictive local ordinances. For example, New York City bans ferrets completely, but they're legal to keep in the rest of New York state. Check with local government agencies such as the health department, animal control or the department of natural resources before purchasing or adopting a ferret.
