Animals commonly eaten by bullfrogs include insects, fish, small rodents, snakes, small turtles, baby birds and other frogs. Before turning into frogs, bullfrogs spend up to two years swimming as tadpoles. As tadpoles, bullfrogs eat algae, plants and aquatic insects. Bullfrogs are territorial and defend hunting territories from other bullfrogs. Prime hunting territories include slow-moving bodies of water such as ponds and lakes.

Bullfrogs hunt their food by hiding amongst plants at the water's edge. They capture prey by extending a long tongue and flipping the prey into their mouth. The bullfrog has teeth on the roof of its mouth to keep the prey from escaping. Bullfrogs can suddenly leap long distances to either get within snagging distance of prey or escape from predators, says All About Frogs.

The bullfrog is the largest frog in North America, sometimes growing as long as 8 inches. They only live around water and hibernate over the winter. Most bullfrogs live two years as tadpoles and four to five years as frogs, although some frogs have been known to survive as long as seven years.
