A brindle puppy looks as if it has a pattern of dark broken stripes and streaks on its fur against a lighter background color of the same hue. Light brindle puppies have narrower striping than heavy brindle puppies.
The background color is usually a variant of red, but some sighthounds, like Afghan hounds, have silver stripes on a cream background. Reverse brindle puppies appear as if they have lighter stripes against a darker background, but that is caused by the dark stripes being so wide that they dominate the coat's color. Puppies with sable coats may have a dark pattern of solid color on the muzzle called a mask.
