Dogs whose coats are made of hair rather than fur are considered hypoallergenic because they are less likely to irritate allergies in the owners, and include breeds such as poodles, Yorkshire terriers, Bichon Frise, miniature schnauzers and shih tzus. The lack of fur on a dog does not guarantee that humans will not suffer an allergic reaction.
Most terriers feature coarse, wiry hair that is much different from fur. These include Jack Russel terriers, Airedale terriers and Bedlington terriers. They are frequently recommended for allergy sufferers.
Corded dogs are also popular choices for hypoallergenic dogs. The Puli, for example, is a breed of dog from Hungary that possess long, corded, water-resistant locks of hair that resemble dreadlocks.
